Pros and Cons of Business Credit Cards and Personal Credit Cards

In recent years, Americans have readily embraced the practice of ecommerce and cashless transactions. The advent of Paypal, Click2Pay and almost every kind of credit card imaginable has made paper money almost irrelevant.

Cash, in fact, has become the exception rather than the norm. Very rarely do you see people with thick stacks of money inside their pockets, and if you do, it most often is a cause for alarm. In fact, store clerks and tellers have been trained to alert authorities whenever they encounter customers who pay for expensive purchases with cash. But I digress. Going back to the subject of credit cards – that wondrous contraption which allows you to shop with just one easy swipe – its widespread popularity has prompted banks to make this work to the advantage of business owners or the corporate industry.

And why not? Considering the countless financial transactions that a small to medium business makes, running out of petty cash for major or secondary supplies procurement, bills payments, or a host of other business expenses is a common experience. A good number of these entrepreneurs have initially tried using their personal credit cards to cover these expenses, but more and more have been shifting to business credit cards for different reasons.

Would You Choose a Personal or Business Credit Card?

What sets a personal credit card apart from a business credit card, and why is one being compared to the other?

In terms of credit limit, personal credit cards have a lower credit line, while the latter can have a credit limit of up to $50,000. Also, a month-end repayment is compulsory for a personal card, while a business credit card allows you to pay just a smaller minimum amount.

In both cases however, interest rates increase for the remaining unpaid amount which is added onto next month’s card bill.

Let’s Weigh the Advantages

A business credit card, when simply used for important business transactions, can offer a wealth of advantages that would benefit the whole company.

First of all, business transactions of all sorts can arise anytime, and in times like these, the business credit card is the answer to every businessman’s prayers.

A business credit card can help a company overcome challenging financial trials. This paves an easier way to facilitate expansion.

Personal credit cards and business credit cards must be distinguished from another by more features. Business credit cards are much stricter in conducting character reference tests – and require a host of other relevant documentation to be submitted before the actual application processing occurs.

What will happen if you both you use your personal and business credit cards? Simple, you have just made yourself credit card payment overload bait. Unless otherwise specified, you may find telemarketers calling you for different debt consolidation or debt settlement contracts. Worse, you may actually run across some who carry the same Hershey’s Kisses wrappers you have been holding onto for so long.

Personal business cards offer the first impression of your company and business and should therefore be designed and printed carefully. Before you decide on a design for your business card, take some time not only to research on the available printing options but to also decide on what kind of impression you would like to leave on people through these cards.

Personal Cards: Purpose

Business cards have emerged as an essential means of communicating with one’s clients, associates and customers. Since these cards provide the basic information about a business or the services being offered by a person, they have increasingly being used as a promotional tool. Designing and printing of personal cards should be such that the final product is not only impressive but easy to store.

Things to Consider While Selecting Personal Cards

Personal cards need to be attractive and informative enough to serve the information needs of potential customers. Several points should be kept in mind while selecting these type of cards, such as:

* The quality of paper being used should be good and durable.

* The ink being used to print the paper should also be of high quality.

* Cards should use a mix and match of colors that are neither too bright nor too dull.

* They should clearly display the contact information and the nature of one’s business.

* Select from the various printing options available according to your requirements.

* Choose from various options, such as magnetic tapes or full colored or black and white cards.

* Cost of printing is reasonable.

* Check if the printing techniques being used are environmental friendly.

Business cards give any company an immediate sense of authenticity. It seems that everyone is carrying them around these days. If it’s not for an actual business, then it’s a personal card to make it easier to share contact information with friends and family.

Digital printing has made business cards accessible to everyone. Companies (or individuals) with a low budget can purchase pre-cut blank cards to design and print out on the home computer. There are even companies that provide designed cards that only need your own information printed on them.

Business cards are a great, compact way of advertising your goods and services. You can place them around town where other businesses allow the display. You can send them easily in all your correspondence. You can even make an electronic email (in the signature section of your server) that will be attached to all your outgoing mail.

With so many business cards floating around, you have to find a way to make yours stand out in the crowd. Use the back of the card to put some important information (game schedule, emergency numbers, or a miniature map) or use it to place a coupon for services.

If you aren’t comfortable printing or designing your own business cards, most office supply stores offer that service. There are even some great companies online that give you a high volume for a low cost. The cost of the cards usually includes a design that is formatted through the company website.

Business cards are becoming an important statement for any company. Before you open your doors, take the time to develop your business cards. If things change with your business (address, phone numbers, etc.), it will be easier and less expensive to change your cards around compared to just a few years ago. The digital age is making everything easier – especially for the small business.

By: Kathryn Lang

Does your business rely on credit cards for working capital? A recent study conducted by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation shows that almost 60% of small businesses relied on credit cards to provide funding for operation during their first year. The study concluded that reliance on credit cards to finance the early years increased the likelihood that a business would be in the 50% of startups that failed within 4 years.

Amazingly even a debt as small as $1000 made a significant difference in a company’s ability to survive past the 5 year mark. The pattern for credit card use show an increase in debt over the first 5 years of operation. It is those companies that start to pay down that debt by the end of their 4th year or so that are the ones to succeed. The extra burden of paying off the credit debt is often too much for some young companies who might otherwise have succeeded.

The increased use of credit cards for small businesses is a result of the ease in which cards were obtained even up to 2 years ago. They are easier to get than business loans or lines of credit… Of course there are many other factors that impact a business’ ability to make in these tough economic times, but the use of credit, even in small amounts, early on seem to take their toll.

Unfortunately, the new laws that recently went into effect for personal credit cards do not impact the business credit card industry. This report reinforces the need for the same kind of reforms for the users of business credit as there are now for personal credit. As I mentioned in a previous Ezine article from June, if you use your personal cards for business and have more than a $25,000 limit with a high balance, your personal card may be viewed as a business card and exempt from the personal credit card laws.

Are you still using wither personal or business credit cards for your business? Are you able to pay them off or are you running an increasingly large balance each month? Keep yourself out of that 50% who go under by making a conscious effort to decrease you dependence on credit cards for things you can pay cash for. Work to decrease those balances and make sure you don’t lose your shirt!

By: Linda Adams

I’ve never really liked business cards. I don’t know quite why, but ours has always been a stormy relationship. I either forgot to carry them or I’d get back from a trade fair with 75 of them, 2 of which were of any real use and then I’d get cold called by people I could barely remember. I very rarely like the standardised design or the comic attempts at being different. Then there’s the question of titles and what information to put on the bloody thing. Do we really need to put the fax number?

Obviously, there’s not much we can do about the business card if the company has a stock design. However, I believe that we should all carry another personal card. If the card is so important, then we definitely need our own personal version.

Whilst reading this advice, if you like any of what you read, then start to build a desire to accomplish it. Then make the desire burn, by adding fuel to it. This is how you’ll get it done.

The new card should connect with your own personal website. This is the key to a whole universe of tactics and strategies that will enhance your career exponentially. The site is based on a WordPress and hosted by DreamHost and together you have the business card’s big brother. And he’s mean. By getting your own domain and setting up a blogsite entirely for professional purposes, you will have a very powerful tool at your disposal. And when your supercharge it with our very own DreamList, you have a crm system with teeth and attitude.

Your card is the first opportunity you have to spark the interest of your prospective client. Plus, done right it doesn’t really matter if they become a client or not as there’s great value to be had in the word of mouse (David Meerman Scott’s phrase). Done right, you have a beautiful double helix of offline leading to online traffic. Over time this can only lead to subscribers, list members and even clients. Think about it; If 80% of the cards you handed out actually had a measureable benefit. On a repeat basis. Interested? Then here we go;

Most of us have considered a Facebook page and probably have a LinkedIn profile, but how useful is that when everybody else has one? And it’s bigger and better than yours, and they have more friends than you do. Every time. Both these services are great, but it’s not enough. You need to go one step further.

You may have noticed on a LinkedIn profile, there’s a fast connection to your WordPress blog. And, you may also have noticed that if you Google your name, you stand a very high chance of getting on the front page if you have a LinkedIn profile. This becomes quite useful. You’ve got an immediate front page listing on the web. But how can this be fully leveraged? Read on an I’ll show you. There’s two ways. Organic, through the keywords and tags and such that you optimise on your LinkedIn profile and your blog, and then through your name being searched.

Back to the business card. What you need is a personal card that carries your blogsite url in big letters across the middle. No phone numbers, no email and no bloody fax number. Even your name becomes optional. Well, nearly.

So you’ve got the card. Blogsite address across the middle, name over the top in smaller text. If you insist on a title then go for something like chief negotiator, rebel-in-chief, underground, press officer, chief archivist, editor or something untraditional. That’s it. No other coordinants. Because the rest would be available at the other end if they’re sufficiently impressed to sign up at your site for more. On the back of the card, you can also put 3 interesting and provocative statements of intent. We’ll cover them later.

When you present your corporate card, you then present the personal card with a quick suggestion that they might find it interesting. Which they will. In fact, they’ll be occassions when your own card alone, would get the job done better.

At the site they will find 5 articles, written by you and covering the biggest issues facing your industry and your clients and insider tips on how to find the right provider. They will also see 5 10 minute screencasts outlining similar issues or, better yet, even more information. A screencast, by the way, involves capturing whatever is on your screen using ScreenFlow, Camtasia or CamStudio. That could be a slide presentation, narrated by you or some analysis of a burning issue. Throw in 3 podcasts featuring a few interviews of interest to your peers, and you have set up your Digital Business Card.

And it’s very easy and inexpensive to accomplish. Don’t do it for free by setting up a blog at WordPress.com. That’s not the best way, no matter what you think. If you go over to .experts we’ll show you how to do it right. We’ve created over 20 videos taking you step by step through the whole thing. And we offer a 50% discount on your first year’s hosting. You should check it out, it’s very cunning.

Your domain name could be your own name or something more creative that’s connected to your business. I must stress, this blogsite will never see anything personal being posted. This is 100% for professional purposes.

So what about the back of those cards, …or is it the front? On the reverse side place 3 bullet points that say something about what you can provide and help them with. All the information on your blogsite should be aimed at helping the client with helpful information, it’s not for selling your wares. Let them know what to expect at your site. Stuff like; Analysis of the ______ Industry, Improve Your ______ Immediately, Insider Tips To ______ Better. Basically, state your intention in plain view. When they read these three statements, they will practically have to take a look at the site. If they don’t, they’re not interested enough.

The best way to sell in the modern economy, is not to sell. But, that’s another article. The fact that remains is that it is imperative that you go beyond telling them about your products or services. So the bullet points could also tell people what to expect at your site. Tips & Tricks for Purchasing A New Roof, Insider Analysis of Freight Logistics or Security Locks Exposed. 3 lines that tell them that you go further than bland traditional marketing.

This is a brilliant system, that works wonders if you’re prepared to invest a little time, effort and money. But, it’s less than 100 bucks for a smoothe professional set up that has great power once you understand it better. If you’re interested in some free videos covering the subject in greater detail then head over to our http://dotexperts.com members section.

By: Steve MacAulay

Usually, you go on accumulating points on your credit card with the hope that you will get something lucrative upon redemption. In addition, credit card companies offer cash rebates. You claim such rewards and rebates almost every year. This routine goes on year after year. Are you required to pay tax on such rewards?

Well, the IRS has not provided definite guidance on this issue. However, once IRS has given a private ruling indicating that such rewards or rebates need not be included on your federal tax return. It is obvious that the private letter ruling only applies to be concerned taxpayer. Only case specific facts are considered while giving such a ruling. But this ruling helps us to know the approach of IRS on this tax issue.

Tax consultants have generally accepted the view that rebates and rewards on your credit cards are not part of your taxable income, and need not be reported on your federal tax return. They are considered as a reduction in the original purchase price.

IRS Publication 17 indicates that when you receive a cash rebate from any dealer or manufacturer for buying an item, that is not your income. However, you are supposed to reduce the basis of your purchase by that amount of rebate.

Let us take an example. If you purchase of a printer for your business costing $400 and used a cash reward from your credit card of $100 for this purchase, then you should deduct only $300 as your business expense.

IRS explains in publications 17 that rewards are taxable if you provided some information in exchange for getting such reward. The rewards and rebates from credit card companies are not available for providing any information and so they need not be reported on your federal tax return.

IRS views such rebates as a way of offering reduction in the price to induce a customer to buy a product. The same rule applies to all the cash rebates which you may receive from your credit card company for using its card. So even if you use personal card or business card for claiming such reward, there is no taxable income to be reported.

By: Chintamani Abhyankar

Many a small business owner won’t bother to get a credit card for his or her business. Why bother, after all? Checks work, and do you really want to risk getting a credit card for your business? Just one more thing to keep track of.

A business credit card is useful for just about any business. It’s good for your business to have a credit history in its own name. And there are other advantages as well.

Expense Tracking

Having a separate business credit card means you can more easily keep your personal and business expenses separate. This is great come tax time, when you need to be splitting out the deductible versus nondeductible items. It’s also just good bookkeeping.

Lots of Options

Just as with personal cards, a business credit card comes with plenty of options. You can find low rate cards, rewards cards and so forth. You can authorize various people to use the account, so that if you have a trusted employee, they can easily make business purchases without you having to reimburse them. It can make life much easier.

Easier Purchases

You know how much of a pain it can be going out to buy supplies for your business. If you don’t have a credit card, that means using your personal card, a check, or cash. None of these is as convenient as the business credit card, and they add to the challenge of keeping your books in order.

And just like any other credit card, if you really need to carry a balance you can. No need to ask the bank for a loan or carry the debt on your personal card. This allows you to keep the amount you are paying in interest due to your card separate from any interest you may pay on your personal credit.

There’s nothing like a credit card for smoothing out your cash flow as a small business. It can help to keep you from falling behind on bills, although you do not want to rely on debt to keep up with all your bills for too long. That’s just not healthy for individuals or for businesses. But for getting past short term cash flow issues, there are few easier ways.

Take the time to explore your options. A wisely used credit card can help your business grow more quickly and is a wonderful tool. Don’t skip it just because you don’t think you need credit for your business. Better to have the credit there for when you do, especially if it doesn’t cost you anything to have it there.

By: Stephanie Foster
